About Designer Mark Monterroso

A Los Angeles native, Mark Monterroso grew up in Atwater Village and graduated with a degree in Graphic Design. For the past eight years he has worked as a designer leading an apparel team at Disney’s Creative Campus in Glendale where he channeled his talent into creating this limited edition Princess Jasmine doll. 

Princess Jasmine was the first Disney Princess to resonate with Mark because of her darker features. He saw them as a reflection of himself. But it was not Princess Jasmine’s natural beauty–but her strong will to make choices for herself–that made an impression. Not to mention, he loves the Princess’s quick wit and humor, a trait he shares with the heroine.

About Designer Javier Garcia

Javier Garcia was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and he remembers taking family trips to the U.S. to visit the Disneyland Resort at a very early age. Those trips are some of his fondest childhood memories, and back then, he never could have imagined eventually working at Disney. He’s spent eight years as an apparel designer, and now leads a team of designers. His passion for Disney, design, and the magic of the characters are all translated in this limited-edition Pocahontas doll.

Pocahontas inspires Javier because she is connected to nature, understanding that she is part of something larger than herself. It’s this balance between humans and the outside world while living her life unselfishly that resonated with him. And Javier believes Pocahontas’ ethos and compassion are something we should all aspire to emulate today. Pocahontas also never felt or acted like she was superior to anyone, embodying a free spirit, even though she was royalty within her tribe. Even if marching to her own beat unapologetically meant getting into trouble. Despite her individuality, she never lost sight of her place within the natural world, personifying confidence, and holding true to her convictions.

About Designer Ashley Losada

Ashley Losada was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and moved to Los Angeles to follow her dream of working for the Walt Disney Company. With a natural passion for art and design, she has now spent nine years providing creative design and direction across many merchandise categories. And it’s this passion for her work that gave way to designing this gorgeous Disney Princess Ariel doll, a heroine that Ashley and her sister bonded with when they were little girls.

Growing up in the Caribbean, the bright colors from Disney’s The Little Mermaid and the beautiful seascape spoke to Ashley. Every weekend, she and her sister would spend endless hours at the beach taking turns playing Ariel and Flounder; and singing along to all the beautiful songs.

The many values in The Little Mermaid also resonated with Ashley. Values such as celebrating a strong bond with family and the desire to explore something more beyond the world in which she grew up. Danae Cendejas is a Southern California native who grew up in Chino Hills. Here, art and fashion have always been central to her life. She pursued her passion for art in Laguna Beach, receiving a B.A. in Graphic Design and Illustration. For the past four years, she’s worked as a designer, and now leads a team across multiple merchandise categories. If Danae could describe Mulan in one word, it would be FIERCE. Having participated in sports for her entire school career and growing up with a brother close in age, Danae has always had a fun familial rivalry that pushed her to do better. Whether it was sparring in Tae Kwon Do, conquering larger hills in Cross Country, or winning more soccer games, the ”anything you can do, I can do better” mentality was real for Danae when it meant standing up to the boys! About Designer Launi King

Launi is the third eldest of six children, raised in Pasadena, California by her Motown hitmaker-turned-pastor father and mother, an author. Launi has worked as a designer and product development executive for multiple entertainment studios learning how products reflect different cultures in each creative role.

When asked to design a Disney Ultimate Princess doll, Launi excitedly chose Disney’s first African American Princess, Tiana. Inspired by their shared passion for cooking, Launi recalled how she and her father would prepare seafood gumbo for hundreds of people every year.  It is a recipe that connects mixed cultures so prevalent in New Orleans. Launi also embraces Tiana’s kindness, her giving heart, passion, resourcefulness, imagination, and beauty.

When Launi first saw The Princess and the Frog, she had to know more about the inspiration for Tiana’s character. She interviewed Rob Edwards, one of the film’s screenwriters, and confirmed that Leah Chase, an African-American Creole chef, helped shape Tiana’s story. Born in the 1920s, the same decade as the film’s setting, Leah later became an activist during the civil rights movement. Together, Launi, Princess Tiana, and Leah embody strength, channeling their passion through their cooking and entrepreneurship.

About Designer Victoria Hamilton

Growing up in California, Victoria Hamilton always dreamed of working for Disney. Eighteen years ago, she followed that dream to the Walt Disney World Resort, where, fresh out of college, she accepted a product development internship with the Disney Theme Park Merchandise team. Her career in product development and design has brought her to many places, and she has been able to create unforgettable memories for Park Guests to take home.

As a child in central California, Victoria and her family would load up the car once a year and drive to spend a magical day at Disneyland Park. She loved how her day started and ended in the most magical spot: in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle.

The excitement of walking down the Main Street U.S.A. area in the morning, the anticipation that evening waiting for Tinker Bell to fly through the fireworks, Aurora’s Castle bookended Victoria’s magical day. The story of the Princess inspired Victoria, too. The way Aurora trusted her heart and always believed in her dreams. After all, ”If you dream a thing more than once, it’s sure to come true.” Aurora pursued her dreams and danced into the clouds at the end, showing Victoria that she could do the same.

About Designer Wes Jenkins

Wes Jenkins began working at Disney in 2017 as a technical designer for the Disney Parks Costuming organization. Since then, he has moved into Global Product Creation as an apparel designer.

Wes dedicates this Princess Merida doll to the memory of his grandma Martha. The first redhead he knew, she was headstrong, opinionated, compassionate, and his greatest supporter. She taught Wes to sew when he was four years old (about the same age Merida took up her bow). An artistic child, Wes was different from his peers and had no interest in upholding the status quo, like Merida. Sometimes it is necessary to break with tradition to find your own path. When Wes’s grandpa died in 1998, he made his grandma a Christmas angel using a fashion doll and fabric he had around. It was something he would go on to do for her every Christmas, and after twenty years, she had quite the collection.

Designing this Princess Merida doll allowed Wes to dedicate something special to his grandma, showcase the design skills he’s been practicing for over 20 years, and inspire others to pursue their dreams and change their fate.

About Designer Nontra Null

Nontra Null was born in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C. Her parents came to the U.S. from Thailand, making her a first-generation Thai-American. She was raised as a ”Disney kid” and started working for the company in 2008 designing apparel and accessories at Disney’s Creative Campus in Glendale.

The strong relationship between Moana and Gramma Tala is similar to Nontra and her relationship with her Khun Yai, so she wanted to pay tribute to that connection in her design. Like Moana, Nontra’s grandmother played a huge role in shaping her life path, helping to nurture her artistic side. She taught Nontra how to sew at a young age, leading her to her career today. A needle and thread were Nontra’s version of the ”Heart of Te Fiti.” Nontra was also incredibly inspired by the culture of Moana and the legacy of family. Nontra’s husband, who works for Disney Animation, helped create the film when she was pregnant with her first child, Hudson, so his name is listed in the credits as a ”Production Baby.” Like Moana’s deep connection to those she loves, her story has a very special place in Nontra’s heart.

About Designer Steve Thompson

Steve Thompson moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Los Angeles in 1992 with dreams of becoming a Disney animator. Once in Los Angeles, he attended the Character Animation program at California Institute of the Arts and began working for Disney in 1994. After many years at Disney Feature Animation, Steve transitioned to the Disney Stores in 2005. Currently, he spends his days creating memorable artwork and products that bring beloved characters to life. 
 
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has always held a special place in Steve’s heart, with it being the first full-length animated film and Snow White the very first Disney Princess. Walt Disney took a huge risk with this movie, but it changed film history forever and created an iconic character celebrated worldwide. The film always reminds Steve to take risks, be kind to others, and stay true to yourself.

About Designer Tetsunosuke Saiki

Tetsunosuke Saiki was born in Yokohama, Japan. After university, he moved to London, where he studied millinery and leathercraft. For the last ten years, he has been working at The Walt Disney Company Japan as a designer in the fashion department.
 
When Tetsu watched the Disney Tangled film for the first time, he felt, ”Ah, I know the feeling,” being an only child who spent much time with his imagination, drawing, reading, painting, and playing with his toys. (Don’t worry — his mum is not like Mother Gothel!) Tetsu never felt uncomfortable with being alone, but often thought there must be something else. 
 
After graduating from university and moving to London to study fashion, he found something he had been seeking for a long time. All of the new experiences came to him like a flood, like Rapunzel felt when she first left the tower. It wasn’t always easy, as many experiences were unfamiliar to him, but Tetsu, like Rapunzel, was brave enough to jump into something unknown. Tetsu believes everyone can share a moment of opening a new door to find ”A New You.” The film Tangled and Rapunzel always reminds him that more of life’s discoveries await.

About Designer Daria Vinogradova

Daria Vinogradova is a design manager and artist for the Walt Disney Company, who heads up a team and works on many magical products. 

Growing up in Rybinsk, Russia, Daria remembers Walt Disney’s Cinderella being the first Disney film she watched. The movie inspired Daria’s love of drawing and creating — so much so that it led to her designing hundreds of paper dolls and thousands of fashions for them. Her projects were always spread out all over the floor (just ask her mom!). 

The iconic transformation scene in Walt Disney’s Cinderella is what inspired Daria to design this Disney Ultimate Princess Celebration doll. In the animated classic, that moment was visually stunning and incredibly magical, as it finally let Cinderella shine on the outside as brightly as she shone within.

About Designer Heidi Ticehurst

Heidi Ticehurst was born in Eastbourne, England, and studied Creative Product Design in Bristol. After a design internship in Shanghai, she moved to London, landing her dream job as a toy designer at Disney, where she has enjoyed her creative role for over nine years.  
 
Belle is a character that Heidi has always cherished, especially as Belle’s story is about courage and confronting life’s challenges. Belle boldly stands up for what she believes in, and her strength ultimately leads her to find true love and happiness. Her sacrifice to save her father is brave and selfless, and Heidi has always admired her for doing what was right even though to do so, Belle had to leave the life she knew to live with the Beast.
 
The thing Heidi loves most about Belle is the heroine’s sense of adventure for far off places. Heidi is a like-minded adventurer who could relate to wanting something more and striving to experience it. The story of Belle is a great reminder that no matter what path we take in life, all we need is kindness and courage.

About Designer Richard Chan

Richard Chan was born in Taiwan and at a young age, he and his family moved to South Africa, where he grew up. He received his degree in fashion design at London’s Central Saint Martins art school and later worked in Paris, which inspired his creative ethos to challenge norms in innovative ways. He now works in Shanghai as a fashion designer for the product development team at Disney. 

Richard’s earliest memory of Disney was when his parents brought home a VHS tape of Sleeping Beauty. As a 6-year-old, he remembers being captivated by the story and gothic-inspired design. Aurora’s story of being born in one place and being whisked away to another life far from her home resonated with his own life of moving to a different country at a young age.

When given the chance to work on a dress for Aurora (as Briar Rose), he wanted to interpret the look as if she designed the gown with her taste and worldview. For Briar Rose, a forest maiden, Richard imagined that nature would inspire her design. The dress color takes cues from the subtle tones of flowers, embellished with petal-like embroidery, creating an elegant ensemble.

About Designer Cathy Clark-Ramirez

Cathy Clark-Ramirez was born in Arcadia, California, before moving north just in time to experience the Disney Princess renaissance of the ’90s. As an avid Disney fan growing up, she had a ”lightbulb moment” when her college art professor suggested she apply to Disney Consumer Products. For over fifteen years, she has brought her love of Disney stories into her work as a designer. On her 13th birthday, Cathy visited New Orleans for the first time, and true love was born. The city’s combination of music, food, architecture, and cultural energy created a vibrancy like nowhere else in the world and she looks forward to each chance to return.

The art deco influences of the 1920s and ’30s, with their bold and elegant lines, seemed like a perfect match for Tiana’s bold strength and determination. Of course, Cathy threw in a pinch of New Orleans flair and theatricality, too. The wishing star was also a significant part of the story and seemed like a symbolic motif to capture, but how can you have Evangeline without a nod to Ray? Fireflies are just tiny low-flying stars, right? That is how Cathy will always see them, little stars looking for their Evangeline.

About Designer Rocío Cintrón 

Rocío Cintrón was born in Washington, D.C to Puerto Rican and Panamanian parents. As a child, her love for art, toys, and Disney led her to pursue a creative career. After graduating with a Toy Design degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Rocio landed her dream job at Disney, and has been adding a little sparkle to Disney toys since 2010. 

Disney’s The Little Mermaid was not only Rocio’s favorite film growing up, but it is also the source of her artistic inspiration. Princess Ariel resonated with Rocio because she longed to be part of two different worlds–celebrating her Latina culture as an American.

Rocío’s vision for Ariel’s dress is a blend of painterly and modern aesthetics. To achieve this look, Rocío channeled memories of painting Puerto Rican seascapes with her father, who coincidentally resembles King Triton. The inspiration for Rocío’s creativity stemmed from the end scene of The Little Mermaid when Ariel emerges from the water and onto land in her shimmering purple dress.
